"In 1756 Rannieston was sold to John Dingwall, stocking manufacturer in Aberdeen, whose mother, Sarah Murray, was a sister of Katharine Murray or Hay, of Rannieston....

In 1780 a ratification of the sale of Rannieston to John Dingwall was given by Richard Hay, only son of Alexander Hay and Katharine Murray."

"Deaths May 13 1793

At Aberdeen, in his 77th year, John Dingwall Esq. of Ranniestown. He carried on business in that place for onwards of fifty years. Early in life he established the manufacture of knit stockings on the same plan as in England; and by carrying the business to an extent and perfection never known before his time, he rendered the most essential service to the town and country."
