from Births and Baptisms

"Sir George Nicolson bought Kemnay, in 1682, from Alexander Strachan, younger of Glenkindie. He was the son of an Aberdeen merchant; and was called to the Scottish Bar in 1661. He succeeded Dr. Arthur Johnston's son, William, as Civilist in King's College, Aberdeen, at which time.. he was styled 'of Cluny '. He was made a Judge of Session in 1682, taking the title of Lord Kemnay, from his newly acquired property. He sold Kemnay, in 1688, to Thomas Burnett, ancestorof the present proprietor."
