The Scots Peerage, the 4th great-grandfather of William Borthwick, 4th of Soltray and of Johnstonburn.




"William (Borthwick), fourth of Soltray' and of Johnstonburn. Forfeited his estates, 11 July 1604 (as having incurred the penalties of treason under the Act 1587, c. 50), for breaking into the house of James Scrymgeour of Fordell and stealing four horses, and for using and uttering false coin. Married Barbara Lawson, and died 24 January 1640, 'commending his soull into the hands of Jesus Chryst, his onlie Saviour.' "
