"James Grant, app. Royal Bounty missionary at Fort Augustus 21st Aug. 1769 ; pres. by Alexander, Duke of Gordon, and adm. 21st Sept. 1775 ; app. chaplain to Lord Lynedoch's Regiment of Perthshire Volunteers (the 90th Foot) in 1794 ; died 2nd Dec. 1801. He is described as a man of cultivated tastes, gentle and amiable in manner, and greatly revered and loved by his parishioners. He marr. 29th May 1779, Anne (born 21st Feb. 1755, died at 7 Manor Place, Edinburgh, 7th Nov. 1838, and buried in St Cuthbert s Churchyard), only child of Captain Duncan MacVicar, barrack-master at Fort-Augustus and Fort-George [authoress of Poems on Various Subjects (Edinburgh, 1803) ; Letters from the Mountains, 3 vols. (London, 1806) ; Memoirs of an American Lady, (New York, 1808) ; Essays on the Superstitions of the Highlands, 2 vols.
