"James Bell, M.A. (Glasgow 1637); chaplain of Colonel Campbell's Regiment ; pres. by Alexander, Earl of Galloway, Oct. 1643; adm. 3rd Jan. 1644. He refused to conform to Episcopacy, and was deprived, 24th Nov. 1663. He declined the parish of Ardrossan under indulgence in 1672, and went to live in Glasgow. In 1684 he was residing in Stranraer, and in 1689 he returned to this parish. [Wodrow's Hist., i., 327.]"

"James Bell, M.A. ; above noticed; returned before 29th Oct. 1689 ; was restored by Act of Parliament 25th April 1690 ; died 30th July 1698, aged 80. He marr. Mary Kennedy, who marr. 2ndly, 9th July 1699, Captain John M'Culloch. [Edin. Reg. (Marr,); Rule's /Sec. Vindication.]"

James married Helen GARTSHORE, daughter of John GARTSHORE of that Ilk and Barbara STARK.1 (Helen GARTSHORE was born about 1618 and died before June 1647 1.)

her deceis foirsaid Except allenerlie the soum of fyftie hundredth pounds scotts mony with the
abulziements of umquhill Helen Gartshoir her daugjter worth the soum of Lxxxxviij lib scotts
promittit and ableist be Mr James Bell minister at Kirkculb to be payed be him to the defunct
her airs or executors In caire of the deceis of the said Helen Gartshoir her daughter before the
said Mr James Bell her husband having at that tym na bairnes or lyf providat be twixt the said Mr
James and the said umquhill Helen conform to the contract of mariage."
