  • Marriage (2): LIVINGSTON, Henry of Falkirk, Provost of Stirling 2

   User ID: N902.

Margaret married James COLVILLE of Ochiltree, then 1st of East Wemyss, son of Mr Robert COLVILLE of Hilton, then of Ochiltree and Elizabeth ARNOT, 21 May 1536(contract).1 (James COLVILLE of Ochiltree, then 1st of East Wemyss was born about 1490 and died by 4 December 1540 in England 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (James Colville) married, secondly (contract dated 21 May 1536), Margaret Forrester, sister of David Forrester of Garden, who survived him, but died before 16 May 1562."

from Scots Peerage (vol 2) 1

Margaret next married Henry LIVINGSTON of Falkirk, Provost of Stirling.2 (Henry LIVINGSTON of Falkirk, Provost of Stirling was born about 1500 and died after 13 August 1575 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Henry Livingston) married Margaret, daughter of Sir James Forrester of Torwood, who was perhaps his second wife, as his eldest son seems to have been of age in 1545, while his youngest son is said to have been born in 1563."

from Scots Peerage (vol 6)

Note:

Alexander, the eldest son, the same text tells us later,
"had a feu-charter of lands in Falkirk from the Abbey of Holyrood on his father's resignation 7 May 1545."

Thus he was 'of age' to hold a feu-charter.This does not necessarily mean he was aged 21 years or older, as individuals could also acquire the capacity to hold property earlier through other means, his father acting as curator for example. 2
