JAMES MAITLAND

James Maitland is not listed as a son of Sir Robert Maitland of Lethington and Thirlstane by The Scots Peerage volume five; only John, William and Robert are listed.

The Thanage of Fermartyn does not claim that Robert Maitland of Netherdale is the son of this James Maitland, only that "the next to be found of Natyrdul is Robert Matulant."

The same volume refers to a brother of James,

"William, who bought the lands of Auchincreive and others from his brother, James, in 1383, and was ancestor of the Maitlands of Pitrichie, of whom afterwards¹[¹ Pedi. of Maitland penes late C. S. Dalrymple]." ^{1 2}
