Research Notes:
OTHER AUCHINLECKS
In medieval Scotland there were others who may have been linked to Auchinleck or the Auchinleck family:
1 On 10 September 1239 William, a chaplain and vicar of Auchinleck is named in a confirmation of church of Dundonald (AYR) with chapels of Crosbie and Riccarton, church of St Quivox (AYR) and church of Auchinleck (AYR)
2 On 6 March 1263 Richard of Auchinleck is named as a juror in an inquest concerning grant of lands of Sornfallow, 'Hefshunt' and Drumgray (LAN)
3 On 28 August 1296 Patrick of Auchinleck is named in a performance of fealty to Edward I, king of England. Then in late January of 1303 he is named as a juror in an inquest into lands of John Baird, and in December of the same year he is again named as a juror in an inquest into land of Dalserf (LAN)
As well as the Ayrshire family of Auchinleck of that Ilk, there is what appears to be a separate line of Auchinlecks, or Afflecks as they are also known, who held lands in the north-east of Scotland. It is not known how, or if, they were related.
4 on 28 August 1296 Matthew, Napier of Affleck, south-east of Old Meldrum, is named in a performance of fealty to Edward I, king of England.
5 On 15 March 1304 John of Affleck, south of Forfar and west of Arbroath, performed homage to Edward I, king of England. On the 28 May 1328 he, or a man by the same name, was the beneficiary of a gift of apdaine of Blair in Gowrie (PER). "Apdaine" is from the Gaelic, apainn, meaning "abbacy; abbey land".
Auchinleck and Affleck are the main modern spellings of the surname of these families. Other older spellings include Auchinlek, Auchinlec, Auchynlek, Auchenlek, Achinlek, Achtinlek, Auchlek, Awchlek, Athlek, according to the Index of The Register of the Great Seal.
