General Notes: "Stiven's grandson, Gilbert (Johnston), who died before 1481, was twice married, and from the second marriage come the Johnstons of Crimond. Of the first marriage was Alexander, who got his lands of Caskieben erected into a barony in 1502, and from that date this family has been known as ' of that Ilk.' George, the great-greatgrandson of Alexander, died 1593, leaving several sons. Two of these were Arthur Johnston, the poet, and William Johnston, M.D ; the eldest son was John, who died 1 614." George married Katharine MENZIES, daughter of Sir Thomas MENZIES of Pitfodels, Provost of Aberdeen and Marion REID heiress of Pitfoddels.1 (Katharine MENZIES was born about 1527 and died in May 1599 3.) Marriage Notes: "George (Johnston), bailie of Aberdeen, married Katharine, daughter of Thomas Menzies of Pitfoddels, provost of Aberdeen, and had issue. This George is understood to have been the progenitor of the Johnstons of Middle Disblair." |
