"Sir John Home died before 1629. He married, first, Marie Sinclair, daughter of John, Master of Caithness, and sister of George, fifth Earl of Caithness. She had a confirmation charter 1 July 1601, in conjunct fee and liferent with her husband of the lands of Whitrig, terce being reserved to John Home's grandmother, Margaret Ker. The King also assigned to them the 'Eist Raik' of the lands of Ousbyr in the regality of Melrose and the lands of Park and Sorrowliesfield, and the lands of Smalhame Spittel."

She had from Sir John an antenuptial charter dated 29 October 1608, in which she is designed Lady Beatrice Ruthven, Lady of Cousland, granting her the mains of Cowdenknows, with the manor and fortalice, and the town and lands of Ersiltoun."
