FAMILY BACKGROUND

Elizabeth Forbes is reported in various quarters to have been the daughter of Thomas Forbes of Waterton. He did have a daughter of this name living at the same period, but she was married to Sir James Strachan of Thornton, and died married to him. he had a daughter Isobel but she was married to John Reed of Barra. He had a sister Elizabeth Forbes but she was married to George Johnston of Caskieben. He had a nephew Thomas Forbes of Auchry, who was an advocate in Edinburgh, but had he been Elizabeth's father -he was born a bit too late to be so - this surely would have been mentioned in the disposition of land. He had a grandson know as Thomas Forbes of Waterton, who was certainly born too late. S who was the father of Elizabeth Forbes, married to Alexander Strachan in 1663? The supposed link to this family may have come about because of the ratification of the disposition of land tp the laird of Tolquhon and Thomas Forbes Advocate.

We know that a man called Thomas Forbes of Aquhorthies had debt problems in the middle of the 17th century. We know also that the family known as 'Forbes of Aquhorthies (in its various spellings) were descendants of a laird, William Forbes - as Thomas Forbes of Waterton was - but not 'of Tolquhon', rather 'of Corsindae'. Moreover, some of these descendants had links with the merchant burgesses of Aberdeen, as this family of Elizabeth seem to have had.

Elizabeth married Alexander STRACHAN of Kinaldie, son of Patrick STRACHAN of Kinaldie and Barbara ROSS, on 14 May 1663 in Inverurie parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1 2 (Alexander STRACHAN of Kinaldie was baptised on 10 April 1642 in Old Machar parish, Aberdeen, Scotland 4.)
