  General Notes:

"Contemporary with Simon Fraser of Keith was one Gilbert Fraser who appears as witness to a confirmation by King William the Lion of a charter to the monks of Coldinghame in 1166, and he was also witness to another charter to the monks of Melrose before 1182. It seems from Lord Saltoun's researches that Crawfurd and Chalmers have confused this Gilbert with a Kyivert whose name very frequently appears with those of Frasers."

from Scots Peerage (vol 7)

"Contemporary with Simon Fraser of Keith in 1166, Gilbert Fraser appears as a witness to a confirmation by William the Lion, of a charter granted by Waldeve the Earl, son of Gospatrick, to the monks of Coldinghame, and he was also a witness to another charter from the same Earl Waldeve to the monks of Melrose, which, though without date, must have been granted before 1182, as the Earl died in that year."

  Research Notes:

GILBERT AS FATHER OF UDARD

The confusion of Gilbert with Kylvert, who was probably Udard's father in law, suggests some basis. That basis may have been that Udard's father was named Gilbert and the two parental names were conflated.

This conflation may have been endorsed by Udard's son being named Gilbert.

Of the group of first Frasers in Scotland we are told that Simon Fraser of Keith had a daughter only to inherit his property or wealth. Bernard appears to have flourished rather later in the twelth century. Gilbert seems a real possibility to be Udard's father.

Clearly this is speculation. It may be that Bernard was udard's father, or that neither Gilbert nor Bernard was.

Gilbert married.
