'The next three inscriptions are from contiguous tombstones : -
Here lyes James Jopp, feuar in Insch, who depr. this life August the 2-, 1672, and of his age 50 years......

Here lyes Andrew Jopp, sometime merchand in lnsch, who dept. this life Feby. 26, 17-2, aged 67 years; and his children, Alexr., Andrew, and Mary Jopps.
In memory of Jean Jopp, spouse of James Staats Forbes of Lochermick, who died 8th June 1822, aged 56 years.

These inscriptions relate to ancestors of a burgess family of Aberdeen. One of them was provost of that city when Dr Samuel Johnson was
presented with the freedom of the burgh - a compliment (says Boswell), " Provost Jopp did with a very good grace."

from Epitaphs
Note: Re
"and his children, Alexr., Andrew, and Mary Jopps" - as far as is known Andrew Jopp had three sons, baptised Alexander, James and John; and two daughters, baptised Helen and Janet. So, in this phrase "children" may be a poetic equivalent of descendants: Alexander his son, then Alexander's son and daughter Andrew and Mary ie grandchildren of Andrew Jopp "merchand in Insch". 1 2

  Research Notes:

DATE DISCREPANCY

Since Andrew Jopp is commonly believed to have died in 1742, at the age of 67 years, making his year of birth about 1675, there is a discrepancy if we take James Jopp, whose tombstone lies beside that of Andrew in Insch churchyard, as his father since he is recorded there as having died in 1672. 4

Andrew married.
