"Sir John Balfour, representative of the ancient family of Balfour of that Ilk, died in 1375, leaving an only daughter and heiress, who married, about 1360, Sir Robert Betoun, familiaris regis, younger son of Alexander de Betoun. There is a charter of Robert II., in his favour, dated 1378, confirming one by Duncan, Earl of Fife, of the lands of Balfour, Newton and Kettel."
