Maria married Right Reverend Mr Gilbert BURNET Professor of Divinity, Bishop of Salisbury, son of Robert BURNET Advocate, Lord Crimond and Rachel JOHNSTON of Warriston, in 1688 in The Hague, Holland.¹ (Right Reverend Mr Gilbert BURNET Professor of Divinity, Bishop of Salisbury was born on 18 September 1643 ¹, baptised on 21 September 1643 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland,^{2 3} died on 17 March 1715 ¹ and was buried in 1715 in Clerkenwell, London, England ¹.). The cause of his death was pleurisy.¹

"At the Hague, in 1688, Gilbert Burnet married his second wife, Mrs. Mary Scott, who is thus described by her son : -

'A Dutch lady of large fortune and noble extraction. Her ancestor on the father's side was a younger brother of the family of Buccleugh, who upon a quarrel in Scotland went over to Holland ; his son was a Brigadier General at the siege of Middleburgh in 1574, and afterwards Deputy for the Province of Zealand in the Assennbly of the States General ; his grandson, Appolonius Scot, who was the lady's grandfather, was President of the High Court of Justice at the Hague. On the mother's side, who was a De Ruyter, she was related to the principal families in Guellder.' " (pages 136-137)
