"Henry, thirteenth Earl of Crawford, succeeded his nephew. He had been adopted in his youth by John Charteris of Kinfauns, and assumed the surname and arms of Charteris, the arrangement being ratified by Act of Parliament 27 September 1584. The charter of John Charteris is dated 29 November of that year. Sir Henry was, however, usually designated as of Caraldston, to which lands the office of Dempster was attached. He sold Kinfauns 29 December 1612."
