PARENTS

Transactions of the Banffshire Field Club 1936, "The Hays of Delgaty", place Elizabeth Hay as the granddaughter of Alexander Hay and Margaret Innes. She is said there to be the daughter, along with Lilias and another unnamed daughter, of their son Patrick. It also states that:

"Elizabeth, married Patrick Barclay of Towie, from whom issued a charter 25 August 1553 (Gt. Seal, No. 842)."

There is some difficulty in practice in making this arrangement work. Making the respective dates work appears impossible.
If 'Patrick Barclay' is an error that should read 'Walter Barclay', the dating is also problematic.

Moreover in Memorials of the Family of Gordon of Craig, Captain Wimberley says, referring to John Gordon the 4th Laird:

"He acquired Johnisleyis and Drymmeis from his father on his marriage : his wife's name is given as Lillias Barclay in a charter of sale dated Turriff 16 October 1593, by which William Gordonn of Auchindoir for fulfilment of a marriage contract between himself on the one part and Patrick Barclay of Towy and Elizabeth Hay, his mother, on the other part, sold to John Gordon, his eldest son, the town and lands of Johnnisleys, etc....."

Elizabeth married Walter BARCLAY of Kerkow and Towie, son of Patrick BARCLAY of Bourtire, Kerkow, Seggatt and Towie and Janet OGILVY, about 1553.1 (Walter BARCLAY of Kerkow and Towie was born about 1529 and died in 1587 1.). The cause of his death was slain by William Meldrum of Moncoffer.

  Marriage Notes:

"Walter Barclay married Elizabeth or Elspeth Hay, daughter of Alexander Hay of Dalgetty, probably in the year 1553, as at that date there is a confirmation of a charter by Patrick Barclay (Towie XV), by which, for sums of money and other services done to him by Alexander Hay of Dalgetty, he conveys to Elizabeth alias Elspeth Hay, daughter of the said Alexander, the lands of Drumquhendill, including the Clayhills and the north side of the Intoun of Meikle Drumquhendill in the parish of Ellon, sheriffdom of Aberdeen, to be held of the Queen. Dated at Tollie, August 26th, and the confirmation at Linlithgow, September 1,1553. This grant was probably in the nature of a marriage settlement, as we find Walter and Elizabeth consenting to dealings in these lands in 1562."
