  General Notes:

"Walter Cumyn, Earl of Mentieth, Guardian and Regent, second son of William Cumyn, Great Justiciar, by his first marriage, before he became Earl of Buchan.

Walter Cumyn, full brother of Richard, appears as a witness, along with his father, at the marriage of Alexander II. and the Princess Johanna of England at York. He acquired the vast territory of Badenoch from Alexander II., it being then in the crown, through the forfeiture of Gillespoe of the branch of the royal M'William line, subdued, as we have seen, by his father, the Great Justiciar. That Walter Cumyn was Lord of Badenoch has been overlooked, even by Lord Hailes, although clearly proved by a composition made between him and the Bishop of Moray."

from Bruces and Cumyns 1

Walter married Isabella Countess of Menteith, daughter of Maurice (Muretach) Earl of Menteith, Sheriff of Stirling and Unknown.1 2 (Isabella Countess of Menteith was born about 1219 and died probably before 1273 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Isabella, Countess of Menteith, is presumed rather than proved to have been the daughter of Earl Maurice, and her personality is largely merged in that of her husband, Walter Comyn, who was second son of William Comyn who afterwards became Earl of Buchan." (page 127)

from Scots Peerage (vol 6)

"Walter Cumyn married the eldest daughter and heir of 'Maurice, Earl of Mentieth,' and in her right became Earl of Mentieth."
