Elizabeth married Sir Lionel TOLLEMACHE about 1647.1 2 (Sir Lionel TOLLEMACHE was baptised on 25 April 1624 in Great Fakenham, Sufflok, England,2 died in 1669 in France 2 and was buried on 25 March 1669 in Helmingham, Suffolk, England 2.)


  Marriage Notes:

"Her (Elizabeth's) father, Burnet says, intended her as wife to Sir Robert Moray, founder and first President of the Royal Society, who, however, married Sophia, a sister of Lord Balcarres, while she was married, about 1647, to Sir Lionel Tollemache of Helmingham, Suffolk, Baronet. Sir Lionel, who was son of Sir Lionel Tollemache of the same place, Baronet, by Elizabeth, daughter of John, Lord Stanhope of Harrington, was baptized at Great Fakenham, Suffolk, 25 April 1624, and dying in France, was buried, 25 March 1669, at Helmingham."

Elizabeth next married John MAITLAND 2nd Earl of Lauderdale, then Duke of Lauderdale, son of John MAITLAND 2nd Lord Thirlestane, then Earl of Lauderdale, Viscount Maitland and Isobel SETON, 17 February 1671(1672).1 2 (John MAITLAND 2nd Earl of Lauderdale, then Duke of Lauderdale was born on 24 May 1616 in Lethington, East Lothian, Scotland 1 and died on 24 August 1682 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

"She (Elizabeth Murray) was married, secondly, at Petersham, 17 February 1671-72, the ceremony being performed 'publiquely in the time of reading the Common Prayer,' to the celebrated John, Duke of Lauderdale (then Earl of Lauderdale), over whom, it is supposed, she had great influence, of a kind 'which encouraged him in his greatest errors.' "

"And on 17 February 1672 he (John Maitland) married, as his second wife, the evil genius of himself and his family, Elizabeth Murray, in her own right Countess of Dysart and widow of Sir Lionel Talmash, to whom she had borne eleven children. This lady is said to have possessed great beauty and an uncertain temper. For years past her name had been closely associated with that of Lauderdale, and at an earlier date she was believed to have attracted the admiration of the Protector himself." (pages 304 and 305)
