"William Cleland - 6th Cleland of that ilk. Was probably born about 1390, and not later than 1410. He was one of the witnesses to a charter to the lands of Watston in 1445 from James, Lord Hamilton, to Sir William Baillie of
Hoprigg. (Quoted in Document.) He is mentioned in reference to his son's marriage in Somerville's 'Memorie of
the Somervilles.' In 1444 'William Cleland of Clelandtoun' is witness to a charter of James Hamilton, Lord of
Cadzow (possibly the deed mentioned above). (Reg. Great Seal of Scotland. Vol. 1424-1513. No. 511.)"
