"SIR JOHN MAXWELL of Carlaverock, confirmed (the Crown confirmation is dated 1 April 1354), as Knight and
Lord of Maxwell, a grant by Robert Sadler to Roger de Auldton of the lands of Westersoftlaw bounded as in the
time of Herbert of Maxwell, the late lord thereof. Sir John's relationship to his predecessor is unknown. As
Lord of Carlaverock he granted his lands of Pencaitland to Alexander Maitland."
