"HERBERT MAXWELL of Carlaverock, successor, and probably son, of Sir John, having sworn allegiance to the King of England, had from him, 15 September 1347, letters of protection for himself and his castle of Carlaverock. Robertson gives two undated charters of David II., one granting to David Murray lands in Lanarkshire forfeited by Herbert Maxwell, the other granting to the latter a discharge of the duty of Carlaverock."
