General Notes: "She (Margaret De Ard) had a brother Alexander, designated 'de la Ard' who was alive in 1375, and was made Captain of Orkney by the King- of Norway. This Alexander, of the Aird, had in right of his mother, Matilda, eldest daughter of Malise, Earl of Stratherne, Caithness, and Orkney, succeeded as Earl of Caithness, but he subsequently resigned the title and the lands belonging to the earldom to King Robert II."
