  Research Notes:

MARGARET HALIBURTON'S FATHER

1
Scots Peerage (vol 4) tells us that the first husband of Margaret Haliburton, Patrick Ogilvy, apparent of Inchmartine, died on 21 November 1592 (p34)

2
It also says that their son, Sir Patrick Ogilvy of Inchmartine,
"married (contract 20-25 February 1609) Anne, third daughter of Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenurquhy" (pp 34-5)
thus placing Margaret's birth in the 1560s or 1570s

3
Yet Scots Peerage (vol 3) states that:

"In December 1586 George Haliburton of Pitcur granted a charter of the lands of Thorngreen and others to his son James and Margaret Scrimgeour, his future wife, daughter of James Scrimgeour of Dudhope, Constable and Provost of Dundee." (p 313)

That being the case, their putative daughter Margaret Haliburton, were she the child of this marriage, would have been born after December 1586.

4
So, if Margaret belonged to this lineage, either:

a] Margaret Haliburton was the daughter of Sir James outside of his marriage to Margaret Scrimgeour or

b] she was of the same generation as Sir James, his sister possibly.

5
Lastly, Sir James Haliburton, according to Sc
ots Peerage (vol 2), did have a daughter Margaret who married John Elphinstone, Lord Coupar:

"His lordship married
First, Margaret, daughter of Sir James Halyburton of Pitcur; second, contract 11 October 1666, Marion Ogilvy, eldest daughter of James, second Earl of Airlie." (p 577) 1 3 4

Margaret married Patrick OGILVY apparent of Inchmartine, son of Patrick OGILVY of Inchmartine and Marion GRAY.1 (Patrick OGILVY apparent of Inchmartine was born about 1562 and died 21 November 1592(dvp).)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Patrick Ogilvy) married Margaret, daughter of Sir James Halyburton of Pitcur."

from Scots Peerage (vol 4)

Note:

The father named here is erroneous, see Research Notes on Margaret's parentage.

1

Margaret next married Sir George HAY of Nether Liff,1st Earl of Kinnoull, Viscount Dupplin and Lord Hay of Kinfauns, son of Peter HAY 4th of Megginch and Margaret OGILVY, before 15 November 1595.1 2 (Sir George HAY of Nether Liff,1st Earl of Kinnoull, Viscount Dupplin and Lord Hay of Kinfauns was born on 4 December 1560 and died on 16 December 1634 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"She (Margaret Haliburton) married, secondly, Sir George Hay of Nether Liff, first Earl of Kinnoull."

from Scots Peerage (vol 4)

"The Earl married, before 15 November 1595, Margaret, daughter of Sir James Haliburton of Pitcur, and widow of Patrick Ogilvie, younger of Inchmartin."

from Scots Peerage (vol 5)

Note:
The father named here is erroneous, see Research Notes on Margaret's parentage.
