User ID: Z217. General Notes: Alexander Sutherland succeeded his father William. In 1627, when just five years old, he became heir to Duffus. His uncle, James Sutherland of Kinminitie, became his tutor. Alexander married Jean MACKENZIE, daughter of Colin MACKENZIE Lord Fortrose, 1st Earl of Seaforth and Margaret (secunda) SETON.1 (Jean MACKENZIE was born about 1622 and died on 31 March 1648 1.) Marriage Notes: "The first Lord Duffus was four times married, his first wife being Jean, daughter and co-heiress of Colin Mackenzie, first Earl of Seaforth, widow of John Sinclair, Master of Berridale. She died on 31 March 1648 in childbed, having had, it is said, four sons by her second husband. She is described as a comelie, oblidging, religious, and good lady." Alexander next married Jean INNES, daughter of Sir Robert INNES 20th of that Ilk, Baronet and Grissell STEWART, on 13 January 1653.1 (Jean INNES was born about 1625 and died on 10 March 1653 1.) Marriage Notes: "The first Lord Duffus was four times married ... He married, secondly, on 13 January 1653, Jean, fifth daughter of Sir Robert Innes of Innes, who died 10 March same year ... " Alexander next married Margaret STEWART, daughter of James STEWART 4th Earl of Moray and Margaret HOME, after March 1653.1 2 (Margaret STEWART was born about 1630 and died in January 1667 1 2.) Marriage Notes: The first Lord Duffus was four times married... He married thirdly, Margaret, second daughter of James Stewart, fifth Earl of Moray, who died in January 1667 ...." Alexander next married Margaret FORBES, daughter of William FORBES 11th Lord Forbes and Jean CAMPBELL, about 1668.1 3 4 (Margaret FORBES was born about 1649 and died on 16 April 1677 1 3.). The cause of her death was childbirth. Marriage Notes: The first Lord Duffus was four times married ... He married fourthly, Margaret, eldest daughter of William, eleventh Lord Forbes, who survived him and was married, about 1675, to Robert Gordon, afterwards third Baronet of Gordonston, but died on 16 April 1677." |
