  General Notes:

Alexander Sutherland succeeded his father William. In 1627, when just five years old, he became heir to Duffus. His uncle, James Sutherland of Kinminitie, became his tutor.

In 1641 Alexander accompanied the Earl of Sutherland on his visit to England, and attended both the Scottish Parliament at Edinburgh, and the visit of King Charles I. He was knighted before 1643.

In 1647 he received compensation from Parliament, for losses in supporting the Covenant. In total he received 3000 merks Scots. One third he gave to his uncle James Sutherland.

He travelled in Europe: in France then in Holland returning with the restored Charles II to Scotland in 1650. (Clan Sutherland)
