"He (Hugh Montgomerie) married, first (contract dated 13 February 1554), Jane, second daughter of James Hamilton, Earl of Arran and Duke of Chatelherault, but by her had apparently no issue. The Earl raised in 1562 an action of divorce on the ground of consanguinity, and this was followed by an action on her part for other reasons. The marriage was dissolved under the laws of the Church of Rome on 30 May 1562, and a second divorce was pronounced by John Knox and his elders on 25 June 1562. Between these two dates, on 31 May, 7 and 14 June, the banns of marriage between the Earl and his second wife were proclaimed in the church of Eaglesham, and on 11 June at Innerpeffray and Monzie."
