James baptised to James howie in monkland witness James cleilland & Jn robyson" 1 2
   Research Notes: "JAMES CLEILAND"
A man so named was a witness at the baptism of James Howie's son in Kilsyth in 1625.

He may be one the 'Kilsyth Clelands, many of whom are listed in the Clan Cleland website:
"There appears to be a family of CLELANDs from Campsie Parish moving into Kilsyth around 1620. It is likely that the Kilsyth CLELANDs descend from these."

Or, since the baptismal record notes that James Howie, father of the child James who was baptised in 1625, was "in monkland", he may be of the Clelands who were in Monkland. Cleland of Monkland was a branch of Cleland Of That Ilk.

"About the beginning of the seventeenth century, Sir James Cleland purchased the barony of Monkland from Sir Thomas Hamilton of Binning, first earl of Haddington, but his son and heir, Ludovick Cleland, sold it to James, marquis of Hamilton. On 6th September 1615, this Sir James Cleland of Monkland was, with two others, indicted for trial, for treasonably resetting Jesuits, hearing of mass, &c., offences very seriously punished in those days, but the diet was deserted against them." (Electric Scotland website)

The Clan Cleland website mentions a George & Lybra Cleland as being "of Glenhuise" and also "in Glenhuise, Monkland." This is particularly interesting since Lybra is not a common name, and we know that James Howie in 1623 was a witness at the baptism of Lybra Howie, daughter of Johne Howie, in Kilsyth parish. Lybra Cleland died before 11 April 1628:

"Lybra, spouse to George CLELAND in Glenhuise in Monkland, Testament \endash 11 Apr 1628, from Commisariot Record of Hamilton and Campsie , Register of Testaments, 1564-1800)" (quoted in Clan Cleland site)

The GRO Scotland site provides her maiden surname:

"Hammiltoune Lybra 11/4/1628 spouse to George Cleland of Glenhuise, parish of Monkland TD Hamilton & Campsie Commissary Court CC10/5/5" (Wills and Testaments)

'Glenhuife' is an older form of Glenhove. In 1581, there was a

"Discharge by John Thome to Robert Boyd of Baddinhaith, in name of George Cleland of Glenhuife, of a feu charter of the lands of Glenhuife, with sasine following thereon and confirmation." (Boyd Papers)

There was a James Cleland associated with this property. In the National Records of Scotland there is a document entitled

"Signature of the lands of Glenhove granted to James Cleland (Clelland)" (Register of Signatures)

and dated 26 July 1667. Signatures were the original drafts in English of the Latin charters found in the Register of the Privy Seal and the Great Seal Register. Thanks to Wills and Testaments we also know the name of the likely wife of this James Cleland:

"Oswald Jean 2/1/1679 relict of James Clelland of Glenhove, parish of East Monkland TT Hamilton & Campsie Commissary Court CC10/5/9"

 Glenhove was situated between Blairlinn and Wester Glentore. 1 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

James married Bessie GILMOUR. (Bessie GILMOUR was born about 1630.)
