THOME, John in Burnhead, Monkland 1
- Born: About 1550
- Marriage (1): HOWIE, Margaret 1
- Died: Before 5 June 1607
User ID: C700.
General Notes:
There are two post-death records for a John Thom or Thome connected to Glentore: 1 "Thome John 13/10/1617 in Glentoir, parish of Monkland TD Hamilton & Campsie Commissary Court CC10/5/4"
from Wills and Testaments
2 "Thom, John, in Wester Glentour, parish of Monklandd 4 Nov. 1616"
from Commissariot Record
Number 2, from information in the register is listed as the husband of Janet Paul, not Margaret Howie "Paul, Janet, spouse to John Thome, in Glentoir Wester, parish of Monkland, 12 Aug. 1615"
Moreover, Margaret Howie is described as "relict of John Thome" on 19 May 1617, whereas the date of the document for number 1 is 13 October 1617.
So neither of these are the husband of Margaret Howie; both Margaret and John Thom her husband were "in Burneheid" rather than in Glentore. Also Margaret was described as "relict of John Thome in Burneheid".There is an earlier record that fits, so is likely to be the husband of Margaret Howie:
"Thome Johnne 5/6/1607 in Burneheid, parish of Monkland, sheriffdom of Lanark Testament Testamentar and Inventory Edinburgh Commissary Court CC8/8/43"
from Wills and Testaments
"The Thom Family of Burnhead Farm" feature in a website about the Waugh family. The map provided there, the William Forrest map of 1816, shows Burnhead farm situated north of Craigneuk and Clarkston and east of Rawyards, all near Airdrie. A summary provided reads:
"It appears as though the Thom family was living at Burnhead from at least 1607 (Will & Testament of Johnne Thome of Burneheid) and 1769 (the birth of Agnes Thom, daughter of James Thom and Agnes Chalmers). Between these dates we know that John Thom (of Burnhead and father of James Thom) filed a Testament in the Hamilton & Campsie Commissary Court on Feb 24, 1725."
from Waugh Family website 1 2 3
John married Margaret HOWIE, daughter of HOWIE and Unknown.1 (Margaret HOWIE was born about 1557 and died before 19 May 1617 1.)
Marriage Notes:
"Howie Margaret 19/5/1617 relict of John Thome in Burneheid, parish of Monkland TD Hamilton & Campsie Commissary Court CC10/5/4"
from Wills and Testaments
Note: Margaret here is described as relict which means that she was a widow. Her husband had died. 1
