Research Notes:
TRYING TO ESTABLISH A HOWIE TREE
This is proposed and incomplete 'family tree' of the Howie family, linked, in the later part particularly, to Glentore and Drumgray in New Monkland parish, in an attempt to connect disparate items in the records into a hypothetical framework that can be researched further, added to, adapted, proved or disproved. The parishes from which the information has been drawn are deliberately limited to New Monkland, Cumbernauld, Slamannan and Kilsyth, these being in the closest proximity to Glentore and Drumgray. The information dates from the 16th century until the early 18th century. Undoubtedly the Howie family in those farm communities had relatives elsewhere in Scotland, for there are a large number of Howies all over Scotland, but from which direction the Howies of Glentore and Drumgray came is still unclear.
Where there is documentary evidence found, this has been included. Inferences have been made in order to draw even a partial picture of what the real picture might have been, in the hope that more evidence will be forthcoming to clarify the truth of the family's history.
A basic inference is that all the Howies included here are actually of the same family tree: if more evidence is forthcoming we may find that they are not.
Given the location, and the settled nature of people living in agricultural properties, together with the limited spread of the Howie surname at that time (1500-1750s), it is not improbable that these Howies are of the same family.
