In 1861 the census of that year recorded the Ballantine (sic) family living at Quarry Farm Tile Work, Glassford parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland:
"John Ballantine Age 45 born Tynron, Dumfriesshire Occupation Tilemaker

John Ballantine Age 12
Mary Ballantine Age 10
Thomas Ballantine Age 8
Janet Ballantine Age 6
Robert Ballantine Age 3"

In 1881 the census recorded John, aged 64 years, and Mary Ballantyne, aged 62 years, living at 230 Duke Street with their children: adopted son Robert P., aged 12 years, and daughter Isabella, aged 16. John was a van driver. Isabella worked as an envelope maker.

John Balintyne, widower, who was present where her death occurred, gave notice of his wife's death before the registrar at Glasgow on 8 July 1886.

The 1891 UK Census recorded John Ballantyne living at 230 Duke Street in the Dennistoun district of Glasgow. he was recorded as 75 years old and his place of birth was "Tinron, Dumfriesshire". His occupation was noted as "Formerly Van Driver".

When John Ballantyne died in 1895 his death certificate recorded him as aged 78 years, a van driver, and widower of Mary Young. Both of his parents were deceased.

"Ballantyne, John, sometime residing at 230 Duke Street, Glasgow, afterwards at Flatt Cottage, by East Kilbride, Parish of Glassford, who died 11 February 1895, at East Kilbride, testate. Confirmation granted at Hamilton, 4 March, to Robert Ballantyne, 136 Moore Street, Glasgow, Thomas Bell, Moore Street Slaughterhouse there, Robert Young, Grocer, Gatehead, near Kilmarnock, and James Campbell, 23 Scott Street, Port Dundas, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 19 May 1890, and reorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Lanark, 1 March 1895. Value of estate £135, 4s 9d."

Robert Ballantyne of 136 Moore Street Glasgow, son of the deceased, gave notice of John Ballantyne's death. 2


John married Mary YOUNG, daughter of John YOUNG and Elisabeth HENDRIE, on 18 June 1842 in Loudoun parish, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Mary YOUNG was born about 1819 in Loudoun parish, Ayrshire, Scotland 5 8 13 and died on 7 July 1886 in 230 Duke Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland 2 12.). The cause of her death was passage of inspissated bile over 4 days and cerebral haemorrhage over 8 hours.2
