DE OGILVY, Alexander? John? of that Ilk

  • Born: About 1263
  • Marriage (1): Unknown

   User ID: C379.

  General Notes:

This Alexander/John de Ogilvy of that Ilk is not specifically named in volume of Scots Peerage, but is inferred in the grant given by his grandson, Alexander Ogilvy of that Ilk, the grantor, to Walter Ogilvy of Auchterhouse, the granree:

"Alexander of Ogilvy of that Ilk ( the grantor, and the grandson of the man being speculated) .... between 1354 and 1361 granted a charter of confirmation to Walter of Ogilvy, son of the deceased Walter of Ogilvy, son of the deceased Patrick of Ogilvy, of the lands of Wester Poury, which were granted by his (ie the grantor's) 'progenitor' Patrick Ogilvy, Lord of that Ilk, to the latter's uncle, Patrick of Ogilvy and Marjory his spouse."

This can be understood to mean that Patrick of Wester Powrie's grandson, Walter, is receiving the grant of lands that were originally granted to Patrick of Wester Powrie by Patrick of Wester Powrie's nephew, Patrick of that Ilk.

Patrick of that Ilk was the 'progenitor' or father of Alexander of that Ilk, the grantor. Therefore Patrick of that Ilk's father was the brother of Patrick of Wester Powrie, and possibly also named Alexander/John (of that Ilk).

The common ancestor of the grantor and grantee was the father of Alexander of that Ilk (speculated in this file), and Patrick of Wester Powrie, who were brothers.
