"As Sir John Stewart of Darnley, first Lord of Aubigny, bore as his crest a bull's head, it has been suggested that his mother, the first wife of Sir Alexander, was a
Turnbull, whose family also bore that congnisance ......It is still a theory only, and cannot be regarded as strictly proved until more evidence is adduced."

Alexander next married Janet KEITH co-heiress of Galbraith, daughter of Sir William DE KEITH of Galston and Unknown, after 1381.^{1 2} (Janet KEITH co-heiress of Galbraith was born about 1333.)

"SIR ALEXANDER Stewart of Darnley, succeeded his father and received a charter from John, Earl of Carrick (afterwards King Robert III.), of the lands of Galston, which he acquired by marriage. That he was twice married seems certain. His second wife was Janet Keith, daughter of Sir William Keith of Galstoun, and widow of Sir David Hamilton of Cadzow, and she survived him, granting a charter in 1406 in her pure widowhood, but the dates show that she cannot have been mother of his elder children."
