"The Gregories.
The point which has now been reached in tracing the family history is that at which help is first obtained from the records of the family of Gregorie itself. Apart from documents of a public or legal character, these records consist of a family history compiled by Dr. James Gregorie, of Aberdeen, early in the eighteenth century, and of the letters of Dr. Reid, of Glasgow, who in his later years communicated to his relative, Dr. James Gregory, of
Edinburgh, the reminiscences of his early life concerning his maternal ancestry. Upon these materials the history can be proceeded with as follows :
IV. James Macgregor, third son of Gregor Duncanson, settled on the Boyne, a district; near the town of Banff, about 1510. He married a lady who was daughter of the Laird of Findlater (Ogilvie), and a relative of Lord Findlater, and by her he had a family of ten sons and a daughter ... "
