  • Born: About 1370
  • Died: 25 April 1414, Elgin, Moray, Scotland 3

   User ID: W181.

  General Notes:

"Innes, John (c. 1370\endash 1414), bishop of Moray, was probably related to the Moray family of Innes of that ilk. The chronology of his academic career may indicate that he was born about 1370. He studied in Paris for an unknown period in the 1380s or 1390s and had become bachelor of civil law by 1396 and of both laws by 1407."

"John, third son, was, on January 23, 1406-7, consecrated Bishop of Moray, and died in April, 1414. He advanced the rebuilding of the Cathedral, and began the building of the great steeple. On his tomb is this inscription :
'Hic jacet Reverendus in Christo Pater et D.D. Johannes de Innes, hujus ecclesiae Episcopus, qui hoc notabile
opus incaepit, et per septennium potenter aedificabit.' * "

" * Translation. 'Here lieth the Reverend Father in Christ and Doctor of Divinity John of Innes, Bishop of this Church, who began this distinguished work and for seven years assiduously continued the building.' "
