  Marriage Notes:

"He (John, 7th Earl of Sutherland) married Margaret Baillie, perhaps a daughter or sister of one of the Earl's fellow hostages at Pontefract, Sir William Baillie of Hoprig and Lamington. She is said to have been a woman of great beauty. She survived the Earl, and, contrary to what Sir Robert Gordon asserts, appears to have remained a widow."

from Scots Peerage (vol 8)

"Margaret or Magdalen, who married John Earl of Sutherland, who succeeded
to the Title in 1442. She is said to have been a very beautiful woman, and the Sutherland family is descended from her second son John. She and her son had many disputes, in consequence of one of which the Earl demolished his mother's
jointure-house at Helmsdale. After this the Countess of Sutherland dwelt in the bounds of Easter Garby, till her second marriage, in a solitary and quiet place beside a chapel which she had built....... Certain persons from Lamington of the
name of Baillie went to Sutherlandshire with Margaret Baillie, Countess of Sutherland, who have ever since been officers of the Sutherland family."
