  General Notes:

"John Middleton of Middleton, the first of that Christian name, probably son or grandson of Gilbert, the sheriff of Forfar, exchanged, in 1539, his old property of Middleton and Drumquharbir for the lands of Nethersailt of Halkerton, elsewhere called
Kilhill, and other lands in the same county, belonging to David Falconer of Halkerton, which exchange was confirmed by two charters under the Great Seal. After this he was styled Middleton of Kilhill, instead of Middleton. He married, firstly, Isobel Falconer.
In 1552, John Middleton likewise obtained a charter of the lands of New Fibber and Davidstoun, in the county of Forfar, from John Scrymgeour of Dudhope, Constable of Dundee. In 1557, a second wife of his is mentioned\emdash Catharine Strathauchin, or Strachan."

John married Isobel FALCONER, daughter of David FALCONER 4th of Halkerton and Mariot DUNBAR.1 2 (Isobel FALCONER was born about 1522 and died by 13 March 1557(1558) 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (John Middleton) died in July 1588, having married, first, Isabella, daughter of David Falconer of Halkerton. She died between 26 March 1553 and 13 March 1557-58 .... By his first wife he had issue"

from Scots Peerage (vol 6)

Referring to The Scots Peerage, volume 5:

"p. 245, after line 3, insert ' 5. Isabel, married to John Middleton of Kilhill (cf. vol. vi. 173).' "

from Scots Peerage (vol 9 Addenda et Corrigenda) 1 2

John next married Katherine STRACHAN, daughter of Sir Alexander STRACHAN of Thornton and Isabel FALCONER, by 1557.2 3 (Katherine STRACHAN was born about 1524 and died before 14 July 1582 5.)

  Marriage Notes:

"In 1557, a second wife of his is mentioned - Catharine Strathauchin, or Strachan. He had two sons, John and Alexander.

To his elder son, John Middleton resigned in 1564 the lands of Nethersailt and two-thirds of the lands of Bent, reserving, however, the life-rent and freehold of the same lands during his own lifetime, and the lifetime of his spouse, Catharine Strachan."

from The Earls of Middleton

"Strathauchin
Katherine

sometime spouse to John Middilton of Kylhill in the Mearns
Testament Dative and Inventory

from Wills and Testaments

"He (John Middleton) died in July 1588, having married, first, Isabella, daughter of David Falconer of Halkerton .... secondly .... Katherine, said to have been the daughter of Strachan of Thornton"

from Scots Peerage (vol 6)

Note:

If the Katherine Strachan who married John Middleton was indeed a daughter of the laird of Thornton, then, chronologically, it would be this one.

Memorials of the Scottish Families of Strachan and Wise by Charles Rogers (1877), on page 36, has the wife of John Middleton, ("John Middleton of Killhill, Kincardineshire"), as the daughter of Alexander Strachan, laird of Thornton, and his first wife Isabel Keith. This last-named wife died in 1595. Their daughter, Catherine, also sometimes named as Helen, would have been born too late to be the wife of this John Middleton; she was married to John's grandson, Robert Middleton.

This Katherine Strachan may not have been the daughter of the laird of Thornton, but possibly 'of the family of Thornton'. 2 3 5 6
