The 1851 census for new Monkland parish Lanarkshire recorded the Russell family living at 10 Coatstown:
John Russel 40 years, Elizabeth Russel 38 years, Robert Russell 14 years, Margt Russell 9 years, Manon Russell 8 years, and James Russell 3 months. John and Robert were working as coal miners. Robert and Margaret were born in Girvan, Ayrshire, and Elizabeth was born in Ireland. The rest of the family were born in New Monkland parish.

In 1861 the census for New Monkland parish recorded John, a cotton winder, and Elizabeth Russell his wife and their five children living at 44 Flowerhill Street, Airdrie. Their ages were John Russell 50 years, Elizabeth Russell 47 years, Margaret Russell 21 years, Marion Russell 19 years, John Russell 7 years, Alexander Russell 5 years, and James Russell 3 years. All were recorded as born in Airdrie, except Elizabeth and Margaret whose birthplace was noted as Girvan, Ayrshire.

In 1881 John and Elisabeth Russell and their son James were living at 10 Coltston, in New Monkland parish. John Russell was 70 years old and recorded as a hanloom weaver; Elisabeth Russell was 63 years old and James Russell 20 years old.

In his 1887 death certificate John Russell was recorded as a handloom weaver married to Elizabeth Rome. He was aged 72 years at death. ^{3 4 5 7}

John married Elisabeth ROME, daughter of James ROM and Margaret ROME MS UNKNOWN, on 27 October 1834 in Girvan parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Elisabeth ROME was born about 1817 in Ireland ^{1 4 7} and died after 23 December 1887 ⁵.)
