In Scotland's Places we find a reference to the Bennan Burn:
"From Wee Hill 3 miles NW. by N. [North West by North] from Tynron village - South to Shinnel Water.
A stream that takes its rise about 1/4 mile north of Old Pingarie and flows in a southward direction and falls into the Shinnel Water near to Holm House" 2
