ORIGINS

"That the family of Byres of Tonley are descendants of the house of Coates, I have no doubt, although as yet the connection has not been satisfactorily traced. James Byres, a prosperous merchant of Aberdeen, was married there in 1667 to Janet Middleton, page 114. At page 109 I hazard the suggestion that he may have been the youngest son of John Byres, I. of Coates, although I have no evidence to show that he had such a son. However, I think it more likely that this James Byres of Aberdeen was the son of William Byres, born 1627 (called James in the family memoir), the fifth son of John Byres, I. of Coates, and Agnes Smyth, and that this William Byres may have been a captain under Montrose."
