In the census of 1851, James Brown a hand loom weaver, born in Ireland, was living at Shank, New Monkland parish Lanarkshire, with his wife Margaret, their two sons Andrew, a journeyman engineer, and John, a hand loom weaver, and two grandsons James and William.

When James Brown died in 1868 his death certificate recorded him as a "Handloom Weaver Married to Margaret Hendry", and as aged 69 years at his death. Both of his parents were deceased.

In the 1909 death certificate of his daughter Christina James Brown was recorded as "Handloom Weaver deceased". ^{2 4 7 9}
