FRASER, Hugh Rector of Woolwich parish, Kent, Reverend Mr
(1764-1837) |
FRASER, Hugh Rector of Woolwich parish, Kent, Reverend Mr 1 2General Notes: "157. Sacred to the memory of The Reverend Hugh FRASER M.A. 32 years the esteemed Rector of this Parish who died on the 14th day of April 1837 aged 73 years. He was a man endowed with the simplicity of the patriarch and the virtues of a Christian. He erected the mansion near this Church as a refuge in his old age and as a residence for future Rectors of Woolwich and which he lived to enjoy 24 years. His active mind however could not rest here. He discovered that a legacy had been left twenty years before to the poor of this parish. He recovered this legacy and the poor have for sixteen years received a distribution of three hundred loaves per week for nine weeks during the severity of winter. He survived all his children, one daughter and four sons, the eldest and last of whom died at Cheltenham at the age of 19. This he often declared was the greatest trouble he ever knew. He is gone alas, but has left an example that all must desire to follow tho' few can hope to equal. Also of William Erskine Fraser eldest son of the above Reverend Hugh Fraser who died September 21st 1822 and of Mary Fraser widow of the above Reverend Hugh Fraser who died March 5th 1835 aged 83 years." Hugh married Mary LLOYD, daughter of Richard LLOYD and Unknown, on 25 June 1803.1 (Mary LLOYD was born about 1765 and died on 5 March 1835 2.) |
