Research Notes:
PARENTAGE of Robert Turing of Foveran
Robert Turing is placed here as the son of James Turing rather than William Turing and Joanna Leslie, on account of the dates involved.
1
Joanna Leslie is said to have married the laird of Foveran, and William is the only laird who fits her dates.
2
Joanna was previously married to Patrick Gordon. He did not die until 1547 at the Battle of Pinkie, so William and Joanna could not have married until after that date.
3
This would mean that their son Robert would have been born at the earliest in 1547(1548).
4
Robert married Helen Carnegie, we are told, about 31 May 1556. He was her second husband. Her first husband was William Lundie of Benholm whom she is said to have married before 25 June 1551.
5
So it is likely that Helen Carnegie was born at the latest about 1539, but probably earlier than that. This would mean that in 1556 a marriage would take place between a woman, already widowed, aged at least 17 years but probably older, and a boy of 8 years of age, possibly younger.
6
It is more likely that Robert was William's heir, though not his father, unless William had been married before his marriage to Joanna Leslie and Robert was born from that marriage. The generational and marriage relationships of the Turings of that time appear to be fraught with variation and uncertainty in different sources. 1 3
William married Johanna LESLIE, daughter of Alexander LESLIE 3rd of Wardis and Margaret FORBES, after 10 September 1547.1 (Johanna LESLIE was born about 1520.)
Marriage Notes:
"Johanna (Leslie), married, first, to Patrick Gordon, Auchindoir, and, secondly, to the Laird of Foveran. Others say she was married to Barclay of Kincarrachy."
from Family of Leslie
"Janet Leslie, Patrick (Gordon)'s wife, survived him : she is described as 'the relict of Patrick Gordon,' and said to have married twice afterwards, viz., as her 2nd husband, the laird of Foveran [William] Turing, and as her 3rd husband, Robert Irvine of Tillylair, son of the laird of Drum (Macfarlane's Geneal. Collns. II. p. 25), William Turing granted by charter dated 1550, for a sum of money paid to him and for other benefits, to Janet Leslie in her widowhood for her lifetime the lands of Pitmellan [or Pitmillan], the Milltown of Foveran, in the Sheriffdom of Aberdeen-confirmed 9 Feb. 1555-56, Reg. Mag. Sig. (Temple's Than, of Formartyn, p. 567), where it is added that William Turing died before this date,"
