When his daughter Ellen Lyon was born in 1900, it was James Lyon who was the informant of her birth at Blantyre on 5 April. He was recorded as a colliery overseer. His marriage to his wife Isabella was noted as "1899 June 7th Blantyre".

In his daughter Helen's marriage certificate of 1935 James Lyon was recorded as "Colliery Oversman(Retired)". 1 2
