  General Notes:

No baptism record has been found for John Burnett with these parents. There is a baptism for a John Burnett, in Longside parish Aberdeenshire, "son to Andrew Burnett in Rora", baptism 13 November 1625. Another, also in Longside, is the baptism on 1 April 1632, of John Barnett, son of Andrew Barnett "in Lochlee". Comparing the handwriting, one would say the first could also have been indexed as "Barnett". It is unlikely to have been the same family. (OPRs)

".... we find an assignation on November 16, 1662, by William Innes of Kinnermonie to John Burnett, burgess of Aberdeen, merchant, of all right possessed by him of Elrick ; it narrates that Sir Walter Innes, fiar of Balvenie, with consent of umquhile Sir Robert Innes, his father, had assigned, in 1634, to William Innes, his reversion to Elrick wadset to Gilbert Hervie, elder ; that Robert Cruickshank, late baillie of Aberdeen, and Mr. John Burnett of Colpnay, to whom Hervie had, in 1650, disponed his wadset right to Elrick, had by letters of reversion, in 1650, became bound to hold the lands redeemed, and made over their whole right on payment to William Innes of twenty-one thousand merks. The letters of reversion by Cruickshank and Robert Burnett, and all right to Elrick, were here assigned to John Burnett."

"All (George) Jameson's sons died in early life .... His daughter, Mary, whose numerous descendants are now living, was first married to Mr. Burnett of Elrick, in the county of Aberdeen."

from Annals of Aberdeen (vol 1)

Then on 12 April 1664, the diary of Revd. John Rowe tells us:

"…today John Burnet Dean of Guild and Marie Jameson were married." John Burnet was a merchant adventurer, sailing with his goods to Virginia and shipping back tobacco, a vastly fashionable commodity at the time. Burnet had become rich and bought an estate, so was now Burnet of Elrick, and having been recently widowed, was in need of a wife to care for his three bairns. But the marriage was short-lived, for John died in 1666 leaving Mary to look after her own two babies and oversee the estate for her eldest stepson.
