Son of John Gordon of Craig, Auchindoir, and Anne Reid, his wife. M.A., Mar. Coll., 1743. App. to Alexander Thomson(1718). Sheriff Clerk of Aberdeenshire (in conjunction with John Durno (1764)), appointed 14th July, 1764. Re-appointed
to same office (along with his son James), 21st June, 1784. One of the Assessors to the Rector of Mar. Coll., 1761-62. Guild burgess of Aberdeen, admitted June, 1759. Prominent Freemason. Succeeded as proprietor of Craig. President of the Society of Advocates, 1780-82."

John married Anne GORDON, daughter of James GORDON of Banchory-Devenick, Merchant in Aberdeen and Margaret CUMMING, on 5 July 1757 in Auchindoir and Kearn parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Anne GORDON was born about 1736 and died on 14 May 1774 ⁴.)

"By his (ie James Gordon's of Banchory-Devenick) first wife he had two daughters, viz:
Ann, who married John Gordon of Craig, and Elizabeth, who married George Moir of Scotstown."
