In 1901, the census of that year recorded a newly married couple living at the home of the bride's family, the Brannans, in North Linrigg Row in the parish of Shotts Lanarkshire. Thomas McCuskly and his wife Ellen were recorded as 21 years and 19 years old respectively. Thomas had been born in Whifflet Lanarkshire, and was a coal miner. Ellen was born in Shotts.

Thomas was a coal miner, according to the 1926 marriage certificate of his daughter Jane. ^{1 2}

Thomas married Ellen BRENNAN. (Ellen BRENNAN was born about 1882 in Shotts parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland ² and died after 12 February 1926 ¹.)
