GORDON, George 14th Earl and 9th Marquis of Huntly 1
User ID: P126. General Notes: "XIV. George (Gordon), fourteenth Earl and ninth Marquess of Huntly, who succeeded to the title, was the fourth cousin once removed of the last holder of the title, being the eldest son and heir of Charles, fourth Earl of Aboyne (see that title), whose great-great-grandfather was fourth but second surviving son of the second Marquess. He was born at Edinburgh 28 June 1761 ; he served for some time in the Army, being lieutenant-colonel first of the 35th Foot, then of the Coldstream Guards, and subsequently, after his retirement from the Army in 1792, colonel of the Aberdeenshire Militia. He was elected a Representative Peer of Scotland at the elections in 1796, 1802, 1807, and 1812. On 11 August 1815 he was created Baron Meldrum of Morven in the county of Aberdeen, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Thistle 10 May 1827. His right to the marquessate of Huntly was acknowledged by the House of Lords 21 June 1838. He died in London 17 June 1853, aged ninety-one." George married Catherine Anne COPE on 4 April 1791.1 (Catherine Anne COPE was born in 1771 1 and died on 16 November 1832 1.) Marriage Notes: "The Marquess married, 4 April 1791, Catherine Anne, second daughter and eventually co-heir of Sir Charles Cope, second Baronet, of Brewerne. By her, who was born 1771 and died 16 November 1832, he had issue" |
