"William Leslie of Balnageith, Forres, born 1747, son of Alexander L. of Balnageith; educated at King's College, Aberdeen; M.A. (29th March 1768); licen. by Presb. of Aberlour 22nd Feb. 1774; ord. to Auchindoir 23rd March 1775; pres. by George III. 11th Aug. 1778; trans, to St Andrews (Elgin), 15th July 1779; declared first min. of the parish 5th Aug. 1783; died Father of the Church 13th April 1839. An original, in mind and manners, innumerable stories are related of his eccentricities, especially of the certificates of character which he wrote from time to time for every type of applicant. Very many still exist among collections of local literary curiosities. He was a man of unbounded hospitality, and regularly entertained at his manse students from the West of Scotland on their way to and from the classes at Aberdeen. He preached almost to the day of his death. He marr. on Sunday [date taken from L.'s own statement], 1st Sept. 1782, Margaret (died at Darkland, 17th Feb. 1803, aged 36), daugh. of Sir James Sinclair of Mey, Bart., and had issue Alexander of Balnageith, born 8th April 1784, died at Metanza, Cuba, 1st Nov. 1820; Charlotte, born 20th July 1785 (marr. 16th Aug. 1811, Arthur Geddes, merchant, London); Anna, born 25th March 1787 (marr. 9th May 1812, Charles Black, writer, Forres), died 10th March 1835; Margaret, born 16th April 1788, died 30th Oct. 1812; Archibald, merchant, London, born 30th May 1789, served heir 3rd Dec. 1842; Elizabeth, born 10th Dec. 1790 (marr. 21st Nov. 1812, Thomas John van Barlow of Roseisle, lieut. 56th Regt. of Foot), died 18th March 1821; Jean, born 29th April 1792 (marr. 7th Nov. 1814, Thomas Brander), died 19th Feb. 1819; William, surgeon H.E.I.C.S., born 2nd July 1794, died in India, 10th June 1831; Helen, born 9th Jan. 1796, died 1803; James, born 31st May 1797, died in Bermuda, 4th July 1819; Isabel, born 26th March 1798 (marr. 10th June 1820, James Imlach, merchant, Banff); Janet, born 19th March 1799 (marr. 9th Nov. 1822, Peter Dunbar, major H.E.I.
