  General Notes:

"As his father before him, younger James was borrowing money to maintain the family home at Thornton, where he and his young wife were living. Amongst his creditors was his father-in-law, with whom his relations had deteriorated. In 1681, he was "put to the horn" for failing to pay him a debt of 779 merks. By this time, he and his father (then living at Keith) were both in financial straights. In 1683 they sold the remaining lands of Thornton to Barbara's father, Robert Forbes, for £13,934 14s 8d and James resigned his own interest in favour of his wife."

extract from Jim Strachan's book about the Strachans Here's Tae Us, with acknowledgment and thanks

"James Strachan fell by the side of his leader "Bonnie Dundee" at the battle of Killiecrankie. He led the clan at the Battle of Killiecrankie on the side of John Graham, 1st Viscount of Dundee where he was killed.

After his death the estate passed into the successive ownership of three Forbes lairds and, in 1720, to Thomas Fullerton of Gallery, the initials of whose son, Phillip (Beau) Fullerton of the Dragoon Guards and of his wife Katharine Scott of Benholm embellish the gilded weather-vane on the keep."
