STRACHAN, James
General Notes: "As his father before him, younger James was borrowing money to maintain the family home at Thornton, where he and his young wife were living. Amongst his creditors was his father-in-law, with whom his relations had deteriorated. In 1681, he was "put to the horn" for failing to pay him a debt of 779 merks. By this time, he and his father (then living at Keith) were both in financial straights. In 1683 they sold the remaining lands of Thornton to Barbara's father, Robert Forbes, for £13,934 14s 8d and James resigned his own interest in favour of his wife." James married Barbara FORBES, daughter of Sir Robert FORBES of Newton and Margaret LINDSAY 'of Meanie and Williamston', on 9 June 1669. (Barbara FORBES was born about 1654 and died after 1708.) |
