Thomas married Catherine ERSKINE, daughter of John ERSKINE 2nd (or 19th) Earl of Mar, Lord Treasurer and Marie STEWART, 22 February 1622(contract).1 (Catherine ERSKINE was born about 1608 and died on 5 February 1635 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

"Lord Haddington married, first (contract 27 February 1622), Catherine, fourth daughter of John, Earl of Mar, the Lord Treasurer, with a tocher of 20,000 merks. The union of two such powerful families was not looked upon with much favour by King James VI., who is said to have exclaimed on hearing of it, * The Lord haud a grip o' me ! If Tam o' the Cowgate's son marry Jock o' Sclate's dochter, what 's to come o' me !"

Thomas next married Jean GORDON, daughter of George GORDON 2nd Marquess of Huntly and Earl of Enzie and Anne CAMPBELL, on 14 January 1640.1 (Jean GORDON was born about 1619.)

"The (2nd) Earl, (Thomas Hamilton) married, secondly, 14 January 1640, Jean, third daughter of George, second Marquess of Huntly, who survived her husband fifteen years, dying in the summer of 1655."
